I don't think either one of us is saying to avoid social norms at all costs. Obviously, that's not even possible.

What is important however, is to understand where these things come from. Then you can make a more enlightened decision as to what to do.

I agree. I was liking MFers observations in this thread right up until shaving body hair makes you a pawn but apparently a shaven face (or insert any number of conventions here) does not.

Anyway, I know he and I would probably agree on almost everything being discussed here, I'm really just picking on his forum debating style, which is nothing new.

Whether I'm subconsciously conforming to some bullshit or not, there are a few reasons that I am happy to be alive right now when pubic shaving is en vogue.

1. It makes my willy look bigger. Nothing wrong with adding a couple inches to my little Bob Hoskins.
2. Most girls prefer the look these days. If conforming to what the ladies like makes me a clueless pawn, then so be it.
3. The crabs have nowhere to hide.
4. Sex feels better. This is not debatable.
5. Reno mentioned an infantile angle. I have to admit, in a non-pedophile way, that a cleanly shaved woman just does something to me biologically. I dunno. It just does.

However, I'm pretty sure if we dissected his possessions and behaviors we'd find dozens of better examples of MFer conforming to societal norms, which I think would make some of his statements in this thread more than a little over-the-top.

I think that MF's point was that people like Daft would probably feel diminished if you took away their iPhone, hair gel, trendy shades, tanning salon membership, etc. And I think he's right. His point was more about the mainstream buying into consumerist fluff/luxuries as a means to get a "competitive edge" rather than the mere conforming to societal norms.

Cause I saw Monkey sit on a stool and order a cheeseburger once. He ate it, even paid for it. What a sheep.

The thread really blew up over a discussion about body hair, not trendy luxury items.

What really made MFer go off was Daft's (and others') contention that his body hair preferences had nothing to do with media/society, that they were ingrained preferences. And, I do understand MFer's annoyance, I don't buy it either. But, I still think his response is a touch on the hypocritical side.

After rereading the thread, though, I am finding myself more sympathetic to Monkey.

I think body hair preference has to do with comfort as well. I had someone tell me that he went through chemo, lost all of his hair and then realized how nice it was to not have it. I don't think this was media/society, but rather a personal preference based on comfort. I don't think it's ingrained to shave one's hair off.
