Daft - is the ultimate goal winning the WS or making money AND winning?

Depends on the ownership group. For many years, up until 2006 or so the pirates under mcclatcht seemed content to lose 90 games and make a small profit. Now they appear to be trying to do both.

As a fan, all that matters is winning. But sometimes you can realize that big spending is NOT the only acceptable path. Like the cubs and Phil's have recently demonstrated.

The Phillies won a title spending. You are right, to a fan thats all that matters. The Pittsburgh ownership subsidies from the league basically covered their payroll. Other teams did the same. It is nice to see them building a good team. It will be interesting to see if they go after a FA or lock up someone like Burnett.

do you have any of the revenue/luxury tax numbers FW, I'd be interested to read them.

Pirates hava Burnett for one more year, I doubt they'll want to sign him as he'll be 37 in 2014.

I could see them going after a first baseman this off season.

I will do some digging, not sure if MLB made those public. I do remember reading in Baseball America that Big Markets were pissed that KC,Pitt and Miami (2+ years ago) were basically getting free payroll. That was partly why the Pirates owner didn't sell to Cuban - he was making his money.

Marlins were receiving zero dollars from parking, concessions and suites during that era. Huzienga was raking all that in Only "revenue" for Marlins ownership was ticket sales and merch. Just FYI.

He didn't have the sweetheart deal Pitt had. Oakland has a horrible deal also. I'm not sure about KC, but their owner is Sam Walton's grandson. Guessing he has a little money.

Daft - what did happen with the Marlin minor leagues? They just quit investing in them? Used to be pretty good.

I think the quickest way to even things up and not have owners complaining about how little clubs are spending would be to focusing on the opposite end of the spectrum and making a hard salary cap

Thinking of my Phillies, just want to notify posters not to bump this thread next year even though somebody has to end up in the cellar! I just hate when posters bump a thread just to break balls!

Yes, we all know the Marlins won this distinction back-to-back the last 2 years! Somehow even improved from 72-90 in 2011 to 69-93 in 2012!

For 2013, circumstances being what they are, the winner for NL East cellar dweller would be limited to 4 teams! The Miami Marlins for all intended purposes are now classified as an AAA team!

Hopefully this can bring their biggest GL fan out of hiding? Word on the street he's secluded doing some kind of experiment! The saying goes "you either lover em or hate em" but I don't know, I love and hate this guy sometimes! More luv though, as you can see from this friendly pot stirring post!
