Pirates are over-loaded with call ups and rookies as it is...

they have the top hitter in the international League. Matt Hague.... but I think they are trying to hold off on bringing EVERYONE up this year.

Pena is ranked 17 out of 27 at 1B in terms of WAR for qualified players and the Cubs are ranked #14 in MLB for production from that position. The only teams in (potential) contention who are getting worse production at 1B are teams where Pena wouldn't be much of an upgrade.

exactly. And he's being paid like one of the better first basemen, which he clearly isn't

that's why I don't think he has value. He was bad last year, below average this year, and is 33 with an inflated contract

will k rod close or be the 8th inning guy?

Rodriguez has a contract clause that guarantees him $17.5 million in 2012 if he finishes 55 games this year. K-Rod is currently on a pace to finish more than 60, though he may not get ample chances to do that with the Brewers.

That's an odd move, John Oxford put up significantly better numbers than K-Rod last year and he has put up significantly better numbers than K-Rod this year. I presume that the Brewers are having K-Rod as the closer so there will be the issue of his $17.5 million vesting option which they shouldn't even consider paying in 2012. I can't see this move being worth much more than an additional 0.5 game win for the rest of the season. Taking Yuniesky Betancourt and/or Casey McGehee out of the lineup would be the push they really need to take the division.
