Depends on the player Archie. If you're 2 out on July 31 and someone like Carlos Pena is available. Let's also say they are in a fight for the WC with Atl and SF. Does Pitt mgmt stand up and offer an prospect or do th safe thing and tell their fans we have a lot of prospects? Me thinks they go the safe route.

this is the big debate in pittsburgh right now

for pena..... who is kinda iffy and jsut got hot.... but only has 1 more year and not alot of $ owed....

he is a perfect stop gap for the Pirates....

and if the right prospects match up it would be worth it...as in positions.... the Pirates are way overloaded in middle infielders and speed/glove guys in the outfield..... as well as pretty stocked in starting and relief pitching...

to the extent they NEED to unload some minor leaguers now AND major leaguers like Diaz to clear room on the 40 man roster...... otherwise they will just be giving away talent in the Rule V draft next year, by not being able to protect some of these slow progressing prospects....

so yeah, I think a guy like Pena or Hunter Pence might be the perfect fits for the Pirates......

Cubs are set at C, 2B, SS. I'm sure they would take a surplus arm. Pena would be a nice fit for Pitt - good glove, power threat, and playing for a contract. That is worth a gamble in my book. Still young enough that Pitt could offer 2 more years and be productive.

Realistically, if the Pirates somehow win the division (and the Wild Card is surely going to come from the NL West) then they aren't going to get far in the playoffs. Wouldn't finishing over .500 be a big victory for them this season? Not in their long term future but at least to given the fans a little bit of hope for the future?

This is from Joe Sheehan's blog today:

Astros at Pirates, 7 p.m. ET. Rany and I got into a thing a week or two ago on the podcast about what the Pirates should be doing, with me arguing that they shouldn't push very hard in 2011 because they're actually not that good, and him taking the tack that the division is soft and this may be their best shot for a couple of years, so why not play it out. I haven't changed my mind, but it's worth noting that with 25 days to the trade deadline, the Pirates are 45-41, finally outscoring the opposition and just a game-and-a-half out of first place. If it's me in the GM seat, I still trade off everything of value to try and build a team to win 380 games from 2013-2016, but the longer they stay close, the harder it will be for Neal Huntington to do just that. This isn't the 2010 Padres -- the '11 Pirates aren't nearly as good as they were. They won't face a winning team until at least July 18 -- the Reds are below .500 but have a good run differential -- and possibly not until July 22. I'm not sure how they escape this trap

I agree totally with that, FW. The Pirates are flattering themselves this season but for the sake of their fans, they shouldn't be sellers at the deadline (unless a ridiculous offer comes along) nor should they be buyers to mortgage their long term future for a crack at the division they really don't have that much of a chance of winning.

to some fans, but when it comes down to it as a GM you are paid to win championships

I like the guy from Sheehan's blog saying set yourself up to big real good for 2013-16.

all the fans that are left are pretty much die-hards like me and we are bigger fans of the indianapois, altoona, west virgina, state college, and bradenton clubs.

one more year won't affect their fan base...

how would it become a great decision?

cubs did not have the talent to be a contender, and going out and overpaying pena was really dumb

good decision because he has more home runs since may 1 than any other player, and will be a nice trading chip now and get them some prospects.

He isn't making that much

archibald, he's getting $10 million!

significantly overpaid for a 33 year old first baseman whose OPS was .732 last year and .797 this year

I don't see why anyone would want him

I could name you 10 first basemen better, easily. Probably 15

he's paid as if he were one of the better 1Bs in the game and he isn't.

any team could overpay a mediocre veteran and trade him at the deadline. I highly doubt they get anyone that'll make an impact anytime soon

I really don't see how the pena signing will ever become a good decision

all it takes is for them to get 1 or 2 good prospects that actually pan out...

they don't need help now, they need it in 2-3 years.

only time will tell if they can get something in return for him or not...

i'll talk to you on or around july 31 I guess

Pena is ranked 17 out of 27 at 1B in terms of WAR for qualified players and the Cubs are ranked #14 in MLB for production from that position. The only teams in (potential) contention who are getting worse production at 1B are teams where Pena wouldn't be much of an upgrade. However, the Pirates are actually crying out for something at that position - Steve Pearce was doing an "OK" job there until he got injured but his replacement Lyle Overbay is terrible when hitting and even worse when fielding - surely the Pirates have someone in the minors they can call up. Anybody.
