i have always tried cold turkey and failed. the patch gave me too much nicotine and irritated my skin, the gum i didn't like, etc...

going to try the methodone route in november

smoking is getting too expensive

Kato, my addiction to the nicotine patches was about $60 a month. I spent ~$80 on my initial e-cigarettes package which will last me 3 months (and probably a lot longer once the novelty has worn off), actually take $25 from that since it includes two batteries which might last 12-18 months. If you don't like the patches (the stronger ones give you awesome dreams) and hate the gum and can't resist the temptation of smoking after a few drinks then it is a really good option. I'll recommend you an option later on today, it's all part of the GameLive service.

P-Roid, as a non-smoker I am gratefull for people to be using those e-cigs as opposed to actual cigs. As a tobaco user and addict I understand the very real effects of the addiction, but come on it does look a little funny.

Seeing a caffeine addict in Starbucks doesn't seem that ridiculous to me but as a dipper if I switched to gum and was walking around spitting my gum juice in a cup it would look ridiculous not to mention digusting.

You do the chewbacca then, Wal? That's REALLY ridiculous looking.

I was just meaning different ways of getting your fix. Nicotine in it's e-cig state is a stimulant like caffeine, you get what you want in the easiest method available.

thanks polaroid

Wally, you don't spit gum juice. That would be counterproductive.

Polaroid, you've pretty much convinced me to get one of those puffers. I've only tried a couple of puffs before.
And also there is no nicotine gum without artificial sweetener. In fact there's almost no gum on the market any more with sugar in the US. Double Bubble is the only one I know of.

That's why I say it's a fucking conspiracy. It's like that genetic engineering all over again.

Reno, I was referring to dip. I have to spit out the juice. I think the pleasurable experience, mostly comes from the spitting. I know people that have been doing it so long, that if they don't have a place to spit they will just swallow the juice. Just thinking about that makes me sick. I'm pretty sure teela is a swallower.

Day one recap:

The hardest part of trying to quit anything in this town is that, chances are, whatever you're trying to get away from probably isn't far away. If you're sitting in a casino, you see countless reminders of the "joys" of smoking. It's really not hard to bum a cigarette from someone - something that I did yesterday. I took about 5 drags and threw it out. Gross. Late at night, I had the most painful cough in the world. I bought a bag of Hall's which didn't seem to help much. And the patch seemed to be making me nauseous as I nearly puked twice. Removed.

Today, I woke up to hack up half of my lung. No patch today. Gonna weather the storm. I slept 12 hours and feel like I could sleep another 3 days straight. I saw several people smoking, looked at them, and thought, "Idiots." I think my mind is right to do this without the patch. We'll see.

This is the one I got:

Atomizers last ~4 weeks, according to the site. Batteries are good for 300 charges if I remember correctly (and unless you're using it continually, you're generally not going to go through more than one battery per day). To get free shipping I added an extra atomizer.

You get x5 cartridges when you buy the starter kit, of differing nicotine strengths but you'll go through these in no time (they are supposed to be comparable to 10 regular cigarettes). You can buy them filled with the liquid or just buy empty ones and fill them yourself and keep recycling - I think I bought 3 of the x5 empty packs.

And if you buy the blanks, you need the liquid. You can buy VG or PG or a mix of the two (I've no idea of the difference) and I got 5 bottles of the green apple. It doesn't taste like apple but the vapour smells like apple. I got the X-high mix so I'd have to puff less and it's obviously better value.

Total was ~$85 for the lot for 3+ months worth, take off $25 for the batteries which should last a long time and it's around $60.

The cons posted by Monkey I agree with. You need to puff more than a regular cigarette and the nicotine does irritate your throat to some extent, but nothing major.

Being around smokers is the worst thing when you're not using any form of nicotine replacement.
