I am carrying a WC exemption right now which is sufficient to obtain permits. When I have been at the busiest, I have used an employee leasing program which helps to mitigate the costs. The stand alone rates are absurd, somewhere around 50%.

by law I could go exempt since I dont have over 4 employees.
but most of the GCs dont care about the exempt law and wont hire you without WC.
I did exempt myself from the coverage though, that way I only have to pay on what my payroll is and not the total amount I make.
which makes a big difference.

but expect a bunch of these laws regarding contractors to get tuffer in the near future.
I know this yr you can no longer go without 1099ing anyone, doesnt matter what they make you have to 1099 according to the law
used to be if under $600 you didnt have to 1099
