We are hiring for a much needed position to be filled at work. While technically the position is an entry level position it has potential to grow rapidly depending on the applicant's desire.

We had several very qualified applicants that had above than the minimum requirements. One even had years of experience and already possessed a Distribution and Collections license which would be required to obtain in time anyways. This same applicant also already has a Class B CDL which would be required of any applicant within 6 months of being hired. Needless to say this applicant was the one chosen to fill the position.

That is until one of the commissioners decided to make a fuss about the cities responsibility to up it's minority standing. While we do have an obligation to hire minorities and personally I have no argument with that, the city nor any other business should have to make special exception in order to do so.

It is unfair to the people having to work with the individual to have to take extra time away from their duties in order to train someone with absolutely no experience. It is not fair to a department which is already under staffed to essentially have to dedicate extra time and manpower to training someone with absolutely no experience. It is unfair to qualified applicants to not get an opportunity to be employed simply because they aren't a minority. It is also unfair to the minority applicant as well to be brought into what will essentially be a hostile work environment simply because their being hired places extra burden on an already overly burdened staff and department.

I have absolutely no problem hiring a minority of any color, ethnicity or gender if they are equally qualified as the other available applicants. I do have a problem making special allowances for any applicant not equally qualified though.

You can't debate it though, especially if you are a "considered" non-minority because it is just assumed you are being a racist or bigot. Even when you lay out the fact and plead the case on it's merits you still are just labeled as such.

Equal Opportunity takes a backseat to affirmative action I guess.
