You might want to do some reading on slavery, Blitty. Whipping and beating slaves was more than common. Rape was rampant. Slaves were property. Nothing more.

The conundrum is that they think that they are actually doing good for society and so do their followers. It really goes back to self interest.

good-jobs saved-created-landmark company and reputation saved

whatever the decision made (good v. bad) totally depends on the perception of the person arguing the thought
