Chicago is the dirty little secret of the liberal media. MSNBC and CNN would prefer that you not talk about the homicide rate of blacks killing blacks with illegally obtained firearms. Please stick to the 2 cases in the last 5 years where a white male killed a black male and the mass shootings. Thank you for your cooperation plommer!
 
Sharpcat, I believe in gun control, it works in many countries but I doubt it could work in the USA.

The US has unique problems.

It's my opinion that social issues are the core of the problems middle and lower class Americans face.

As an outsider it's astonishing to watch the constant fighting going on within the country.
It seems as though everyone hates the poor and being poor itself is unAmerican.

Y'all could learn a thing or two from "foreign" countries, but first things first, switch to the goddamn metric system already.

So we have an American op ed writer, a guy who puts on workshops for retirement investing in ohio, claiming Australia is not a safer country with their gun control laws. This is why I was asking people from Canada, Australia, Europe/Asia, or wherever that post here on gamelive what their opinions on their own nations gun control laws vs the US, or whether or not they agree with their nations gun control laws.
 
Where I was born every person over the age of 21 is allowed to own as many shotguns (not pump action) as they want for hunting. It's basically limited to two shells per shotgun just like skeet shooting in the Olympics. You need a permit for a handgun and it's hard to get. All males have military assault rifles (full auto) not semi and they keep them locked home. Once a month they take them to the shooting range for practice. It's like a National Guard. Many homeowners use the shotguns to defend their properties or commit crimes. If someone enters your property and you shoot him with a shotgun shell in the face they won't have a face anymore. The gun murder rate is in the single digits for about 1 million residents. People shoot their guns for hunting or for competition like skeet shooting.

Actually the author quotes Joyce Lee Malcolm, Professor of Law at George Mason University Law School.

Asking random posters to share their experience is severely flawed and it would be best to stick with a much larger collection of criminal statistics as a predictor.

While I don't consider my self foreign (I am a Canadian born citizen living in Canada) I will say I believe there is more to solving the problem of guns than the controls suggested.

I think the problem may have more to do with the culture and beliefs/paranoia that is so prevalent in US society.

I've noticed that the countries compared to the US all have higher tax rates and much more generous social programs and that the citizens of those countries are far less opposed to the taxes.

Seems as though Americans put more value on their "personal freedoms" than what is best for the country as a whole.

Thanks Plommer. some good points there. Most of my friends in my line of work that have moved to america from europe or india/asia have moved here because of entrepreneurship or computers, but have very different opinion on alot of these issues involving personal freedom.

I just think you have to take the personal freedoms into account when you are talking about the incredible start up culture and inventiveness of American culture. America is a land of major contrasts though, tough to make blanket statements about it, I knew that growing up. I could be out in the south bay/ silicon valley one minute and out in small town methenburg / methamphetamineville in 30 minutes. California is a country unto itself.

Whats your opinion on canadas gun control laws? where is xpy, would like to see his views on Australian gun laws

Another American "academic" analyzing other countries gun laws and gun crimes and pointing out their weaknesses??? People admire America for alot of things but I dont think many countries look to Americans for gun debates or how to frame their gun control laws. I havent heard any admiration of the american gun culture from other countries, I may be wrong though. I am just curious to hear peoples views that live in foreign countries what their opinions are about their gun laws.

Why would you think people from other countries opinion matters? You have to consider a difference in culture.
 
Over 500 murders in Chicago this past year alone......What percentage of murders in the entire US have been committed by owners of legally obtained guns?

Plommer makes a strong point that you are not seeing. The culture in the US is greatly different than the culture in Canada/Australia so you can not compare their rates of crime to ours. What you can look at is the changes in violent crimes prior to gun bans in those countries and compare them to current rates of violent crime.

I agree with the gun control laws in Canada, I don't know anyone personally that owned a handgun.

Most of the weapons in this country are owned by hunters (shotguns/rifles) for hunting.
Improper storage of a firearm can land you in jail here.

From my travels across both countries it's not difficult to come to the conclusion that America is far more hard core, with the major contrasts as you described.

Canada is far more laid back and Canadians trust their government more than Americans seem to trust theirs, there is also less opposition to taxation here, as long as the taxes are used to improve the quality of life of Canadians.

I think I'm getting a much better understanding of why Americans want guns and I don't disagree, but It's not the same here in Canada.
The solutions are different for the two countries. Gun control seems to be working here.

People in other countries love guns even more than Americans. They just don't obtain guns because they are afraid of their personal safety. When you are scared of getting out of your house unless being armed you have already lost your freedom.

yea. 500 a year. thats less than 2 a day. who cares.

one year in medellin there were 5,000 murders. and guns are mostly illegal there. they just buy em in the usa and ship them down.
