Well, there are countries with high gun ownership that have low homicide rates as well... like Switzerland (which is even lower than England). I don't see the correlation.

Gun deaths aren't really a fair comparison anyway. You have to use homicides. If guns are eliminated, there are alternative methods to murder.

To me, it's a societal problem. These people aren't going on shooting sprees just because guns are available to them.

You have to remember it's a cultural thing as well. For whatever reason there are over 300M guns in circulation in the US and at that number, 'gun control' has long since passed as a viable option. People like their guns. People in the UK wouldn't miss their guns because they've never been allowed to have them (excpet farmers, vets etc)

It is a societal problem and my biggest concern is 'copy cats.' I don't think it's a coincidence that these events are happening more and more often.

I have no clue how you even begin to tackle it.

Who gives a fuck about politics, USA, China, or anybody else? These parents that lost children, fuck.

I don't wish to apologize for this comment as it was written upon first learning of the ordeal, but I do think that it was inappropriate for the medium. Everybody deserves the right to their opinion and the only way things get better is by discussing every angle and working through it all. I'm still very sensitive to this situation even though I have never met anybody near the actual devastation. For those of you with children, you will understand the sensitivity. We all tend to be more affected by events or people that we can identify with. I have teared up many times since learning of the massacre and still can't imagine the rest of the lives of the people directly affected. I don't have an answer for ways to prevent this from happening again, just as I found myself not having the answer to a lot of major things in today's world. I do believe that unstable people are capable of anything, regardless of regulation or restrictions. Will gun control keep somebody from killing their own mother and children? Is over-medication the reason for instability to escalate to mass murder? I have no clue. I am not apathetic to any of the issues, but I don't have an answer. Perhaps this is exactly the reason why I went to the emotional response on the issue rather than digging deeper. Right now I'm a micro-manager of my family and macro-management seems impossible. What does that mean in the grand scheme of things? Again, I'm at a loss. Maybe I need to look within at the way I study and incorporate world events to my family's every day life. As a formally educated person with fairly diverse life experiences, I can't help but wonder what the average person is to do in the search of answers to these layered problems. Perhaps the average person can do nothing to keep a fractured mind from doing the unthinkable. I guess the only thing I can do is open my mind to all ideas that are presented, rather than dismissing anything that seems contrary to conventional wisdom.

I apologize to Cougey for trying to take away his Constitution.

I don't really hunt much anymore, but I've seen quite a few wounded deer running around the woods before. Hunters don't always get off clean shots and sometimes can't track them. It's preferrable to drop the deer immediately.

I don't understand the assault on "assault" rifles. Functionally, they are no different than semi-automatic hunting rifles. Would it make people feel better if people who go on shooting sprees use handguns instead? In fact, there would be very little difference in the amount of rounds one could fire with multiple holstered handguns. It's not like they're long range shots. And in most cases, the victims are cornered anyway.
They can use semi-automatic hunting rifles then. I think the public is sick of the NRA preaching the rights of the constitution while 14 shootings occur in chicago on Christmas Eve and day.
