What the hell happens in The Ultimate Fighter?

i get that it is a show about MMA fighting. do they actually fight in the show? if so, why wouldnt they just have the guys fight in a regular UFC/strikeforce/whatever fight? if not, what's the point of it?

Basically a bunch of amateur fighters taking on one another with the winner scoring a 'real deal' MMA fight on fight night...

so do you watch them train all season and the fight is at the end? or is it fights each week? whats the deal with the different "teams"?

Last time i watched it was Team Koschek vs Team GSP.

Basically 45 mins of shit talking between fighters, watching different training techniques followed by a fight at the end.

Winner advances, loser licks his wounds and in the end the team with most victories is declared winner...
