Stupid shit that sports talking heads say

It's not something "They Say" but something that they do that pisses me off. I hate it more than I can relate to anyone that ESPN's ticker always headlines Tiger updates when he is playing over other players. If Tiger misses the cut it takes the lead over a guy who is actually leading, if Tiger fails to win it takes the lead over a guy who wins his first ever or at least first in a very long time.

I don't dislike Tiger Woods, in fact I am a big fan (more so of what he was than what he is) but he isn't the only player note worthy and it's completely disrespectful to the other players on tour.

You can take everything above, change it to football and replace Tiger Woods with Tim Tebow and the same complaint applies.

For the record it's not the fault of Tiger or Tebow, it's the medias fault.

In Tiger's case, it is the fault of people like me. The media doesn't do that stuff randomly; good business dictates they cater to what people want. People like me are interested in Tiger over everything else and all evidence suggests there are a lot of us.

I can understand how it would be annoying for people with a pure and honest interest in the sport though.

Same basic principle for Tebow I guess. I personally don't understand that fascination and I am with you on that one. I suspect and believe that one will die down because, while Tiger does always have a very real and interesting over-riding plot to follow - i.e the chase of Nicklaus' majors record and making the argument for being best of all time - I see nothing compelling about Tebow.

He is just some dork.

One thing I have heard over and over from fans and talking heads alike - for years - decades - that I find stupid is variations of:

Sports owners are stupid to give out the deals they do and they try to use CBA's to protect themselves from their own stupidity.

I find that to be an airheaded oversimplification. While I don't doubt that some owners are smarter than others, it is the natural system that drives things in such crazy directions. It is organic inevitability.

Owners are not just being stupid when they give a free agent an extravagant contract. A 30-way auction is a ridiculous thing and you simply aren't going to win one with an average deal. It's easy to say fine, if some owner makes a big offer, just drop out of the bidding - but there are pressures from the fan base and the need to sell tickets and TV advertising which is predicated on having a competitive team with top players.

Plus you are at the mercy of other owners who do genuinely stupid things. It just takes one out of 30 to move the bar and everyone is stuck with the results in arbitration and whatnot.

Then if the owners do the one thing that makes sense in such a ridiculous circumstance - collude - it blows up in their face.

So, yeah.

Your attention please. If the Houston Texans blow out the New York Jets this evening, it will NOT be because there were a few blowout games yesterday.

A blowout could happen. Houston is a significant favorite and somewhere around half the time, favorites cover the spread and in some of those cases they cover with room to spare. In this case that starts getting into blowout territory.

Or the Jets could cover or win outright - but the point is, if that Houston blowout does happen it will just be one of those things. Blowouts happen sometimes. It will not be some predictable effect due to what San Fran and Minnesota and Chicago did yesterday.

That is all.

I don't know if it is stupid per se, but I am always dubious when they talk about distractions.

Like okay Aldon Smith got busted for DUI/weed/whatever - fine. And he plays in a game a couple days later - fine.

But these commentators can go on and on for hours about how it is a distraction for his teammate. What does that mean? I am Frank Gore and I'm going to forget to take the handoff because half my concentration is on Aldon Smith's legal situation?

The linebackers only use one arm to tackle because their thoughts are so scattered?

I dunno man.

Weird thing was San Fran lost that Indy game. I don't know how. The talking heads said they needed to win. They did not want to fall further behind Seattle so they clearly needed to win. So they would.

But somehow they didn't.
