If I thought it made sense I would. I don't know that the battery is the problem. I park in the garage. . Why would this be any better than the charger the tow guy had? He was unable to charge it.

Because the battery charger of the tow guy does not charge your battery. You charge your battery at home for hours..not minutes so it wouldn't die when you need it.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Gotcha. Sorry. Pulling the girl card. I am not mechanically inclined. I will look into it. How much are they? Incidently, I have never had this happen before due to weather.
 
You can get one as low as $20 from Walmart. You can charge your battery between drives if the car seats for more than a week or two. I have to use it on my old truck I rarely drive because it seats a lot and the battery is relatively new and under warranty. It's like the old saying "If you don't use it you lose it".

The longest it sits w/o being driven is about 3 days, but even then it's not driven much once I do. If they are that cheap, it definitely sounds like something to look into. Thank you.
 
So...I hadn't heard from the mechanic...call today.."Oh yeah, we've got it ready to go."

Apparently bad battery they put in a new one and it is going to cost me $195. I'm so confused....cuz when I talked to the guy Friday I told him the old battery should be under warranty. Tell him I will be by later.

Think about this and I talk to a few people. Aren't they supposed to call you with an estimate and get permission to work on your car? Call them back. Talked to woman. She admits they totally fucked up. They will put the old battery in my car and charge it to get me to batteries plus where the battery is under warranty.

What I don't get, if they are able to charge it, why was the guy who came out to jump it not able to? He ended up just towing it. ????


I hate mechanical/car issues. Clueless.
 
It is key to have someone who you trust as a mechanic. I can't over emphasize that enough. Do some searching online and through any contacts you have that live in your area. If you have no other options, question some of your neighbours and they may point you to 'their guy'.

Also, if you don't have AAA, just get it and you will never have to worry about any of that shit. When you break down, if AAA can't fix it, they tow you to your trusted mechanic. Every now and then you will pay for a whole year and not use it, but when you end up needing it, it is worth the $125 or whatever it is for a yearly membership.

Simple and effective.

I actually have 2 trusted mechanics; one in the city here and another one that is located out by me in the stix.
 
I had the same thing happen to me with battery plus battery. You have to drive the car to their store to have the battery replaced when it's under warranty. So next time ask the tow guy to jump start your car and drive to battery plus without taking it to the mechanic.

My wife's car wouldn't start a couple week ago and the tow guy told her to take it to the shop but I told her to bring it home and I can either charge or replace the battery if needed. It's very easy to replace a battery.

The mechanic wants to put a new battery because that's how he makes money. He doesn't care that your battery is still under warranty because you didn't buy it from him.

I have it Mr. Q.....not AAA but same thing thru Farmers Insurance. I called them. The guy came to jump it and couldn't get it started so he towed it. I won't have to pay for any of that...but if the place he towed it to can get it charged, why couldn't the tow/jump guy.



Archie...are you asking or telling me..that's what I was trying to figure out? I just want to make sure what ever is wrong gets fixed. But if I only need the new battery then I sure as hell don't want to pay $200 to have one put in when I have one covered somewhere else. Is there a difference between a bad and a dead battery? jumping and charging? I don't get this.
 
a jump start basically allows your car to start via another power source, using the dead battery as a conduit I think.

at times people can get jump started and recharge their own battery through driving..... thus I think people confuse a "jump" and a charge

a charge is more like what Pavy is talking about, hooking your battery up to an external power source for a few hours.


but yeah i'm not really clear on the specifics, but I lean heavily towards the above. that is why I put a question mark there.


I think people use the words "jump/charge" interchangeably and they aren't the same at all

if I jump my car with my little jumper set or via jumper cables and another car's battery, I'm just using that external power source to start my car for me
 
Most Sealed Lead Acid Batteries for automobiles can only be discharged a few times to less than 50% of their capacity before they will no longer hold a full charge. Even a new battery will no longer work as well if you say leave the lights on more than 4 or 5 times and have to re-charge it.

I used to use the cheap batteries, but have finally given up on that as I don't need the hassle of it not starting in the extreme cold.

Another problem that goes ignored a lot of times by car owners is the cleaning of the battery terminals. If you get that build up on the terminals, it will greatly affect the ampacity of your battery.

Also, in the case of SLA batteries, more expensive is usually better. If you buy el cheapo battery you will likely have problems every few years but if you buy a better one, you can get 7-8 years of problem free service. Sometimes, mechanics, or home mechanics will install a slightly under-sized battery (usually to save a few bucks) and this can also greatly affect the car's performance.

The Deep-cycle marine batteries are more properly suited to being discharged to less than 50% capacity and can withstand several hundred discharges. This is why the Marine cells are generally used for storing solar and wind power.

Thanks everyone again. This battery was bought in June ....I don't drive much..maybe 20 miles a week? Would this be part of the problem? I know driving recharges your battery.

Maybe it is just the corroded cables like you said Q. I hope that is it. All I know is I have way too much stuff to do in the next month to be without a vehicle for too long.
They are supposed to let me know early afternoon. I think they are running the tests they were supposed to do in the first place before they just randomly put in a new battery.
 
The conclusion I get from your problem here IAG is that you might look for another mechanic to use! How long would it have took to repair a more serious problem than just a battery with these people? Just saying!
 
I think this is a good company. I think there was confusion as I did not accompany the car to the mechanic. I probably should have followed up on Saturday. The woman was super apologetic. She said there was confusion between a guy who usually works there on some day but was at the other store and some note was interpreted incorrectly. Anyway, I think they will make it right.

I was kind of under the gun because the tow guy was here. I expected to just get a jump and be on my way. I had to make a snap decision and went with someone that someone knew blah blah blah.

I think there are probably a number of people having problems due to the weather, so I will give them a pass this time. As long as they end up making it right. I am still not sure what is going on now. They said they would call me back early afternoon.

Mr. Monkey, you are one of those "weather guys" aren't you? ...the kind that looks up the weather in every place that every person he knows lives?
