I may need further explanation of what pintrest and instagram are. I kind of get facebook and I've seen twitter.....but what is this hashtag business?

1) Why is not called a pound or number sign?

2) If I type "#tossingsalad" in google it doesn't do anything. Do I have to type this in twitter? Instagram? Is there a hashtag search box? Do web forums incorporate this stuff?

I don't use Twitter but I have seen it on a couple of porn blogs. So if you don't want to sift through everything and you have a specific interest, you can just click on #asians or #lesbian or #downsyndromeporn or whatever. Just entries with that hashtag will come up. For it to work, the blogger has to categorize stuff as he goes along.

I feel sure the concept is the same on Twitter. If you want to see everything about, I dunno, Katy Perry, you could probably just click #KatyPerry and it would weed everything else out for you and you could just be in Katy Perry heaven and focus on all the fascinating things about her. Perhaps you wonder if she is grateful to her fans. A hashtag search could help solve that mystery.

I know you can just click on a hashtag. I don't know if maybe you can also type it somewhere and get the same effect. Probably.

That symbol # has always been called a hash symbol. The name hashtag is simply an accurate word for what it is. Number sign is an alternative and more common but I guess when they had to come up with a name, hashtag seemed more distinctive or something

I always called it a pound sign. Why don't they just have a search bar? I don't get it. I get what people are saying when they say hashtag such and such...but as a practical thing I don't get it...but then again I don't read porn blogs or twitter, so maybe it's not important.

idk why people use it elsewhere, but I know on twitter that if you post something, and then #whateversubject your post will appear in the subject thread as well, and links you to it. I don't really know why people started doing it or what the point is either, I don't think anyone really does, just a new fad.

For twitter if you search #whatever you can find a page that has all different posts associated with that subject.

I don't get it either Shdw. I guess it's more apt to capture things that are "trending" in the moment? and it won't pull up just anything that might have whatever you are searching for listed in the article somewhere. Are you searching with the hashtag on google or in twitter itself? Does it matter? I keep thinking I will use Twitter. I have an account...retweeted a few things once and a couple of personal things but it's just not something I think about using.

Cougar Bait is the resident expert on Twitter I think.

I don't really know iag...I don't use it to search at all.

I believe it is a common search feature shared among 5 or 6 websites (facebook, twitter, instagram, pintrest, etc.) and if you put the # in those sites as a post it can be found from across the hashtag-verse. so a #applesmakemehorny post on instagram will also popup in a twitter search

I told you what it is for - and some other peeps chimed in - and you guys are still saying you don't get it. You must be overcomplicating it. Or maybe you are just more comfortable not getting it, like as a protest or whatever.

It's not complicated at all. It's a search tool. It denotes a category. It brings up all the tweets that use that hashtag.
