If for some reason you didn't trust a piece of software, there are ways to track what it is doing.

You could simply download a packet sniffer and see if the application is sending/receiving any information through your network interface(s)...

You could also build a hook into the Win32 Network List Manager API and monitor the applications that are sending/receiving information but that's quite a bit more complex.
