ok just watched the clip. Smid should have been ready after dropping his gloves. It all happened pretty quick, but this is a tough and rough game so Smid should have known better. I don't see anything wrong with what Avery did. It certainly wasn't a sucker punch that's for sure.

Just watched it. At first it seemed like a fair punch, but after more review Avery was very deceptive. He should have squared up with Smid instead of pulling that pussy shit. He went from declining the fight to having his fist clocked and ready in a matter of a second. There is no place for deception in hockey.

Complete neutral opinion but don't listen to the announcers view so much. One look at it and IMO Smid was looking right at him when Avery first attacked him. Left himself in a bad backing away position but probably should have known better?

Plus the guy is a lot bigger than Avery so wasn't like he bullied some small dude.
