The vast majority of people suck - the proportion is the same among gamblers. But there are definitely a lot more colorful guise in the gambling sub-culture.

I've met a lot of fascinating SBR-era posters.

There's just alot of depth there. Hustlers, people trying to make it as pros, some very talented. Beating games no one thinks is possible, colorful personal lives. A lot of it is ugly. The essence of America : You have the same themes that most movies try to explore only it's real and not forced absurdity.

I guess that is what I liked about Rounders. It tried to introduce different type of gamblers from the grinder, to the cheat, to a talented player, unfortunately it did it in a very poor, unrealistic manner

Gamblers suck at a much higher rate than the rest of the population - however in terms of a movie subject, they are obviously better than many things. They do stupid shit and fuck things up and hurt people - which is the garden out of which so many movies are grown.

And of course the theme of the big win is going to be appealing escapism for a lot of people regardless of the implausibility.



I guess I agree that gamblers are colorful. I think of a gambler - an actual gambler - I picture a dishonest, needy, superstitious, self-deluding manchild - who sure can talk loud. Colorful!

The appeal of colorful is something I don't get. Not just with gamblers but with most things. Donald Trump and Terrell Owens and Ted Nugent are colorful. Show me someone colorful and I'll show you someone I want to shut up and settle down so the grown-ups can talk.

But I could be in the minority on that.



In terms of gamblers who are colorful in a positive interesting way, in my experience, they are a rare species.

No, I'm not a gambler. Except, as I say, in the airy fairy everyone-who-takes-any-kind-of-risk-ever is a gambler sense.

I guess if you like labels and you want to label yourself something for everything you do in your life no matter how insignificant, then you could label me: gambler, cook, writer, baseball thrower, unemployed warehouseman/accountant/buyer/CS rep, housemaid, pool player, cyclist, recording artist, philosopher, chauffeur, television/movie critic, walker, addictions counsellor, singer, random thinker, banjoist, cat babysitter, Jeopardy tryer-for, bowler, computer gamer . . .


I personally don't label myself all those things. For me, to start attaching labels, a thing would have to surpass a certain level of significance to my existence and identity.

In my life, gambling is an afterthought. Sometimes I have a passing thought that I should gamble more - and there is sense to that - because I do make money at it - but it won't happen for the simple reason that: I just forget about it. Doesn't cross my mind.



So no - not a gambler. Seriously, I would tell you if I was.
