I need some words of wisdom.

Got my bonus from my job that ended a few weeks ago, and I am fucking bullshit. Got less than last year and I worked an extra 2 months this year. Picked up the check today and the GM told me have a good winter, he would see me in the Spring. My direct boss, the chef I worked for is in South America until Thanksgiving, so I cant go to him and voice my concern. In the past bonuses were around 30 -35% of what one grossed. This year I got 21%.

My contract had a stated minimum, which I got, but then could increase based on hours and performance. I have monthly reviews which i had received the same ratings as the previous years, but had more cumulative hours this year, so I assumed falsely that I would have a bigger bonus this year. Also, the cumulative bonus pool is based off of a % of sales, which was greater than last year, so the decrease does not correspond with a lack of bonus pool funds.

I feel I totally got fucked, and need to make my opinion heard, not that anything is going to change, but what is the professional way to do this?

Or I am thinking about filing a hostile work environment complaint to make up for the money I was expecting.
 
`Maybe I am simplifying it but why wouldn't you simply ask the GM the same question you are asking here? You mentioned sales increasing but did the profit coincide with the increase in sales? That could be their only substantial argument against what is in your contract and should be easy enough to prove in either case.
 
Personally, around here, we are just thankful we get bonuses.

As a starting point though, I would maybe inquire with your HR department, or payroll, or whatever, as to why it is less. Feel out the reasons and then go from there. Maybe tell them what you told us about how your bonus is normally paid, and you are just wondering why it is so different this year.
 
That's why jobs that are bonus dependent are risky. It's a complete judgment call. And most of the time, it's not related to your individual performance but the performance of the company as a whole.

Happens in financials where someone like one of the managers will donk off millions of dollars while the rest of the division is performing well. As a result, the traders get fucked out of year ends.

I'm not even going to start playing the what if or I'm pissed game over "bonuses lost." Fuck does everyone in american feel they are self-entitled to the "american dream?"

if this is a surprise then I apologize, but it should not be it's part of the game.

why would this be a joke? The bonus pool money came from the 20% added onto everyone's bill, gratuity, or service fee or whatever one would call it, maybe bonus is the wrong term. To be divided up at the end of the season based on # of hours worked and performance, with both accounting for 50% You cant take money from the gratuity pool and pay the electric bill. So yes I do feel somewhat entitled since, I feel I earned a portion of that gratuity. So if one works more in one year, than the other, his bonus would be larger.

In my case since I worked more had the same performance ratings as the previous year and got less. Something shady happened.

anyway I cooled down, I going to wait for my Chef to come back and talk to him. I wont ever work at this place again.
 
Yes Tully, good thing you're chef wasn't there when you were hot! Talk to him in a relaxed logical way and hope you get what you want! Maybe something got fuked up and he's not aware of it! Good luck my friend!

It DOES sound like you are entitled to something but non necessarily more than last year. It is very possible and even likely (given data from service businesses worldwide) that your company did less business, and thus collected less bonus to go around.

If last year your business did 1mm in net business and charged a flat 20% like many in the industry there was 200k to go around. If they did 10% less business that's 900k or 180k to go around.

Some other things that would reduce your total potential pool is decrease in prices (same amount of business notionally but less revenue generation) or increased hiring/management stratification. If the company added tipped employees to do the same job which MIGHT have happened if labor is cheap then there are more mouths to feed from the same bonus pool so to speak.

All of this said, it's not unheard of for organizations that charge an upfront service fee instead of p2p gratuity to wrongfully withhold the collected tips. Most recently the employees of international spa/wellness organization Canyon Ranch won a multi-million dollar class action aghainst management for just that very scheme.

Just be cool. Ask your direct supervisor if he can share with you WHY your bonus was less than you expected. Explain your position, listen to his and in the end accept the resolution. You might not like it but in the end your relationship with the organization is not worth completely burning to the ground. Good luck.

Problem solved. When they ask you to go back (when it's time to go back) say you aren't interested in working for the owner. When they ask why tell them how you feel.
