An old joke with jello about Cambodia. If I'm right in thinking that kato posted that 'cause of that joke then it's funny to me. You know the whole "pay attention" type joke.

Hmm.

I think it's because Jello Biafra is the lead singer of the Dead Kennedys, as well as, Jello the posters' namesake.

I could be wrong.

But I'm not. :dude:

So I'm planning on flying to Ko Samui from Bangkok and going to the Full Moon Party on Ko Phangan for New Year's Eve, then I'm going to either fly or take a 6hour caravan to Phuket for a few days. How does that sound?

What were your favorite islands?

Any advice/recommendations are highly appreciated!

That sounds really good! You're going to be pretty messed up after the Full Moon Party because they sell/give away everything there but at least you'll have a few days before leaving Thailand to recover. Phuket's really close to Patong which is Thailand's biggest beach and probably I think it's biggest tourist scene too. That's where all the ladyboys perform in the open air bars on the street. And Koh Phi Phi - the island that The Beach was filmed on - is like 30-45mins away from Phuket. It's more of a relaxing/sporty kind of place so if you want a good place to chill before heading back on the plane it's perfect.

I've stayed in so many places there but I've probably had the best time in Koh Samui and then Koh Phi Phi. Koh Pha Ngan is seriously full on. I think you'll love it but the last time I was there it was a group of us females and one guy and he spent most of the time trying to take care of us. It's a hedonistic crazy kind of place but as a woman we really had to watch out.

My best advice seriously is to stay away from the ice. Sounds so silly but I've had Bali Belly every time I've gone there. At some point I'll have had a few beers and then be a bit buzzed so I'll order a mixed drink or whatever and then spend the next week totally sick. And when you're out in public the toilets aren't the kind you want to spend any time squatting or puking over so again DON'T HAVE ANY ICE!!! :)

Before you head off the Full Moon Party go to a chemist in Koh Samui and get whatever drugs you think you'll need to feel ok when you're done with Koh Pha Ngan. They have every drug possible and will know what you're talking about even if the brand name is different. Often everything is on the shelves but if you don't see what you want just ask them as some pharmacists or whatever the fok they are keep their stashes in pencil cases behind a counter. Some chemists have strange hours and you don't want to be stuck missioning around for one just so you can function.

Unless you eat in flashy restaurants that cater to the Germans and Scandis every night, it'll be impossible to spend even close to what you think you will. I've always stayed in pretty nice places and bought a ton of stuff, ate and drank my face off, did a heap of adventure things, whatever and I always end up spending way less than I expect to. At least in Thailand and Vietnam (have never been to Cambodia but I assume it's the same).

Stick with tuk tuks or cabs to get you around. Common sense but there are some dodgy fake cabbies and they're bandits. So only use metered taxi cabs. Even if the price they quote you seems cheap (and it will seem like it to you) they usually demand way more when they drop you off or take you to some fokked up place where they earn a commission for getting you there. Like a diamond shop or some temple. Tuk tuks between Phuket and Patong are pretty decent and the same in Koh Samui. Don't take any in Bangkok. You could end up in some bloody jungle.

Stay away from the Tourist Police unless you actually need them. They were started because a lot of Aussie and European girls were being kidnapped and kept as sex slaves but there are quite a few dodgy ones who target the white guys. Usually they just want to bribe you but I've heard some crazy stories from the guys at the Aussie bar in Koh Samui where they've been roughed up. That bar is called The Outback and seriously if you want to know anything or meet people or whatever, go there. There is only one main street in Samui and it's directly across the road from the beach so you'll have no probably getting around to wherever.

Oh and for guy stuff - If you're going to get a 'special' massage, make sure you negotiate the price before hand. Those chicks can be dodgy too. And if you happen to be playing pool or just sitting in a bar and a Thai girl comes up and asks to play with you or if she can sit down, she is 99% expecting you are going to pay for her jacked up drinks all night (which she won't even drink but will keep ordering) and often is a hooker expecting you take her home. Which is cool if that's what you want but a few of my guy friends have been left dealing with probably the only decent sized Thai men in the whole country when they've tried to leave at the end of the night.

I'm sure there's a lot more but that's all I can think of at the moment. The smell of sewage is pretty rank but you get used to it after a few days. And the mangy dogs and the people trying to sell you shit when you're on the beach, often little kids. But if you make a good 'friend' he'll take care of you and get your drinks/drugs/food and keep the others away.

Seriously you're going to love it I think. I'm 100% jealous that you're going. :)

WOW, Awesome write up!!

I kind of want to cancel my trip now. Sounds kind of intense. Why did you scare me like that, Oksy?? :nope:

Most of the flights are either sold out or the remaining fares are rising quick. There are various airport/bus/ferry options.

I'm trying to get a decent deal but want to avoid multiple hours on a bus, especially when hung over. Do you recall exactly what method you used when flying to that area? Going through Surat Thani airport looks to be the best option so far...

I wish you were coming with me as my guide, you are a total Thai travel pro!

Truly don't be worried. I've been there by myself for like a week after a break up with a boyfriend while waiting for my friends to get there and I felt totally safe the whole time. It's just remembering that when they see whiteys we = cash so even though the majority of Thais are lovely and are just happy to take your cash properly, there is still that dodgy element. Same as everywhere really. The places you'll be will be heavily populated at that time of year... you'd really have to try to get yourself in some serious shit but you just can't be as trusting maybe of the Thai girls as you would of locals in other countries. With the Aussies and Euros you'll have no problem.

I usually fly into Bangkok, Phuket or straight to Koh Samui. But for you I'd suggest getting to Bangkok and taking a flight to Koh Samui from there. ie I just checked on Nok Air and put in random dates: Going Bangkok to Koh Samui on Dec 23 and returning to Bangkok on Jan 3 will cost you $150 USD. Play around with the dates and change the return to include Phuket but it's really too cheap to bother bussing it all. And often I've pieced together different airlines too. Koh Samui to Koh Pha Ngan is a boat ride. I want to say it'll be about $8 USD but we took a private boat quite a few times just to not have to deal with a schedule. That was maybe $20.

There's also a special ticket they have that gives you discounts if you're flying to several spots within the country. I can't think off the top of my head what it's called but I can look it up for you tomorrow.

Oh and when you think of the places that are down here - Fiji, Bali, Maldives, Vanuatu - Thailand is the only place I've been to many many times. I've been to those other places and they're great too but it's really the lowest fuss, cheapest place to go where you can either relax, mission or party the whole time or combine it all. Vietnam's a bit more rugged I'd say but still awesome. Just not as touristy which sometimes you want if you're checking a place out for the first time. I think you'll really like it, especially that time of year.
