I have a cat and I "abandon" her a lot. I take off for weeks at a time and leave her alone. She is so pitiful when I return. I decided not to do that to her any longer and not bring her with me. She's adapted very well to living at a new home and I don't have the behavior issues that she was exhibiting earlier. I think she was very lonely and I was a horrible pet owner for months.

You think cats care that much.

This is a situation I repeatedly find myself in where I'm not sure how much effort to put into a response, not being sure how serious you are being.

I'll go with low-to-medium effort.

This is a thread about heartbreak and guilt and when you are dealing with decent, caring human beings in the situation I outlined, you are going to have those emotions. My sister is a tender-hearted female who had her cats since they were little kittens. There was already guilt and plenty of it. Death will lead to heartbreak for that sort of person regardless.

Given the circumstances, it can only be amplified. My sister is not going to just say, "Oh well, I'm sure it was just two separate instances of cats dying of diseases undiagnosable by veterinarians. I have no responsibility" She is not going to feel nothing and wash her hands of it. It doesn't work that way with that sort of human person.

No, there is going to be heartbreak and guilt - that will no doubt always be lurking somewhere for the rest of her life.

I thought the cat died of heartbreak... :clueless:
