Kid was gay and bullied. I wish I could have talked to that kid. High school sucks but you only had 24 months left of it. You could have moved to Toronto and joined a gay troupe. You could have went to college and tossed batons and drink bitch slaps.

I want to sugar the gas tanks of the parents who raised mouth breathing neanderthals that mock people different from them.

These bullying stories are much more complicated than people (and the media) thinks. I was on the receiving end and the giving end of some moderate bullying throughout my years. While no-one is wholly to blame for results like this (and even lesser results down to hurt feelings), everyone along the line has culpability. Both sets of parents, the authorities (schools), and even the kids involved (yes flame away I'm including the victim).

I feel that in most of these extreme cases there is usually something clinically different, I.e. depression, anger, etc. with the individual that makes the perfect storm for a response to what is perfectly normal teenage interaction.

Additionally, I think the media and parents groups are just now finding a scapegoat in bullying for what is a larger and historically misunderstood phenomeno. Teen suicide.

I wanted to say something along these lines but didn't quite know how to approach this touchy subject.

Teenage suicide is horrible. The thing is, everyone is bullied in high school. If you're not ugly, you're short, or you're fat, or you're wearing the wrong shoes, or you're simply younger. Everyone is different. Everyone is made fun of.

School should be a safe place where a kid can go to learn without having to put up with shit.

Outside of extreme cases where a bully is fixated on one person, I don't really agree with this. High school, like college, like the workplace, is equal parts learning/working and socializing.

That said, the aforementioned kind of bully should be registered on some kind of national list.* One strike and you get transferred to bully school. Two strikes and you do time in juvy. Three strikes and you're banned from the schooling system for good. You'll make a fine mall cop.

Sorry wally, all that is IMO.

:fivergays:

Some real good posts in here. Great post Boner.

I got bullied hardcore when I was about 7 years old @ a summer camp by 2 kids who were a lot bigger than me.

They made me so miserable. It actually took me a while to tell my my mom and for her to do something about it.

Yeah high school sucks. No matter what you look like, the clothes you wear, how much money your parents have, how many people you root... It all sucks.

And I had a relatively great high school experience. Relatively.

The people in this thread who expressed concern should do something if they're not already. Be the dorkie oldie who goes to the school and tells kids to trust him, things will indeed get better. Even if only 10 kids believe you, it's better than nothing and def better than millionaire celebrity saying the same thing.

Adopt a teenage kid. Not figuratively but you know...
High school's sucked since forever... too many hormones in an enclosed place. But if you care, help a bloody kid realise it'll get better than that whoreshit.

Common, being afraid to go to school for fear of a team of hooligans might kick your ass or piss on you in gym class is not part of socializing. That shit does not happen in adult life. That isn't preparing anybody for anything.

Sorry 5ver but I have to agree with this. Not all of what is educated in a school is in the books. And when obviously you might not have to deal with someone pulling down your gym shorts in the office what you learn from dealing with that in high school can be invaluable applied to another (completly different scenario

Pretty much why I told my Mom.

There was no end in sight. I had no one to back me up because we moved every six months. My 7 year old brain couldn't devise a plan to get the best of two 9 year olds that outweighed me by 40lbs each.

What are we talking about here? The occasional ribbing or being fucking TORMENTED daily. Hell, once in grade 9 the entire gym class saw my balls. The kid in the story was being picked on because he was gay, I wonder if he had even come out to his family. He was tormented. That shit isn't part of anything.

I was very thin and gangly in high school and was picked on by this one loser from the wrestling team for a bit. I took a knife out of our kitchen hid it in my sock then whispered his name in Spanish class. He looked back and I smiled and lifted up my pant leg. Never bothered me again.

Shit's sad bullies should just be killed.
