I might have a friend flying down to visit and hang out and would love to get out and play some poker. What are the best places in SW FL for Poker?

1-2 NL and 2-5 NL are the games I primarily like.

I have only been to the hard rock in tampa to play.
 
Not sure if you're talking Sarasota area. Never been anywhere there. As far as Tampa area goes, Hard Rock is nice but too impersonal for my likings.

Derby Lane has a completely new rebuilt room which is kinda nice.

My favorite is Tampa Bay Downs in Oldsmar though. Very nice looking room. Many friendly dealers. Ongoing tournaments.

Anywhere from Ft Myers to Tampa, just looking for a place that has some friendly people. Everytime I have been to the hard rock, great beautiful place but like you said EXTREMELY impersonal. I will probably see if I can check Tampa Bay Downs

So you know what I mean about Hard Rock. Allll business there...no time to have any fun. I don't like that. Tampa Bay Downs has friendly staff and fun players as well. Makes the whole experience more enjoyable.
 
Hard Rock has too many wanna-be pro's as well. I mean I remember sitting next to a kid who was probably 23 and said he had just won 200k on pokerstars... then proceeds to play in the 2-5 NL game. I mean no offense but if you just won 200k and it was the 3rd time you had won big money this year online, why would you mess with $100.00 buy in's down here? Also, sat next to far too many drunk idiots in the 1-2 games.

Well in Vegas I always used to play drunk, so I guess my statement is hypocritical. However at the Hard Rock I saw far too many people go all in with marginal hands and crush my AA or KK and I realize that is poker but I heard comments like "Shoot, I was just getting ready to leave" and "I needed to go take a piss so I just wanted to go all in". Just flustered me a tad at the time and when you are losing.. blame the drunk idiots! :)
 
i meant taking money from drunk idiots being the goal of poker. sounds good on paper but sooner or later (usually sooner) i always end up being the drunk idiot getting my cash taken while i spiral down into a mire of shame and confusion
