A life of cardio is the life of Victoria’s Sarah Kaufman.

The dancer-turned mixed martial arts champion is nearing her first fight as champion of the Strikeforce Women’s World Welterweight (135 pounds/61 kilograms), which she won Feb. 26.

The Strikeforce MMA organization inherited Kaufman’s contract when they purchased the struggling EliteXC in 2009.

Though Kaufman (11-0) would prefer to fight as often as every three months, Strikeforce had put her on hold -- until now.

On July 23, Kaufman will make her first defence as welterweight champion when she fights American Roxanne Modafferi at Strikeforce Challengers in Everett, Wash.

Strikeforce is the highest platform for women’s MMA in North America.

Modafferi is a known fighter, with 20 fights to her record, 15 of them wins.

"There’s a lot of footage on Modafferi, she’s been around for a while."

A solid wrestler, Kaufman hopes Modafferi will start the fight by “standing up,” exchanging strikes.

“If she does, it will make an exciting fight, that’s what the fans want, it’s what I want.

“But I think it’s likely she’ll eventually go for a take down, and want to go to the ground,” says Kaufman, who is celebrated for not only her striking power but her renowned take-down defence.

“As long as I can punch I’m happy.”

In the meantime Kaufman, an instructor at Zuma gym in Vic West, has a trio of similar sized training partners who are fighting in AFC 3: Evolution, at Bear Mountain Arena on July 17.

Nick Driedger (145 pounds), Connor Wood (155 pounds) and Diego Wilson (135) will have Kaufman in their corner at Bear Mountain.

Kaufman’s intense regime means a lot of conditioning.

“I’ve had enough fights with Adam Zugec as my coach, we know where I need to be cardio-wise, weight-wise, you can only do so much.”

“I don’t want to be in the position where I have to follow someone else because I’m tired.”

I don’t think you can kill them all, they’re going to be there anyways and people like bunnies.
