The fonny thing is that the prison knew about their plan. They were admitted as high-security inmates because their gang was known for having heliopter pilots in case they needed to evade from prison.

Their lawyers gamed the system so that their status would be downgraded to minimum security, which meant they could go out in the yard by themselves. As soon as that happened, some kid (who knew the prison for having been locked up there in the past) landed the helicopter in the prison yard.
