Michael Jackson's Thriller - a 13-minute-and-43-second music video was released.

I remember being in high-school and after finishing class at 3:10pm rushing home to watch the premiere of the video live on Muchmusic in Toronto that day, it was quite the hyped event. Wasn't even a fan of his back then.


Video has 124,048,731 views as I post this.

I think they played the Thriller video at midnight or something every night for a while. I faintly remember my babysitter allowing my brother and I to stay up and watch it with her. She knew what time it would be on anyway.

Plommer was a confirmed stoner and rocker/metalhead in 1983, wouldn't be caught dead listening to MJ back then but I remember being very interested in viewing the vid, which I enjoyed.

In 1984, the National Coalition on Television Violence classified more than half of 200 MTV videos surveyed as too violent, including the videos for Jackson's "Thriller" and "Say, Say, Say." Dr. Thomas Radecki, chairman of the coalition, was quoted as saying, "It's not hard to imagine young viewers after seeing 'Thriller' saying, 'Gee, if Michael Jackson can terrorize his girlfriend, why can't I do it too?' "
