Same shit as always for me. Get-together at my sister's place. So I have to drive and pick up my brother then head over to the festivities and then drive him home after.

The get together is nice. We are all pretty low-key - except the little guy who is now the star attraction. That's all good. The meal is always fantastic.

All sandwiched between a bunch of useless driving around. 4+ hours. If conditions are perfect. Could be quite a bit more. Often is.

Not that I mind or am resentful or anything.

Doesn't sound like it.

He doesn't drive. He is a 52 year-old man with no license and no vehicle. So someone has to get him. We want him there. Like we really do. Resentment aside, we like him and everything.

My parents could theoretically take turns but they are getting older and I just figure I am the more appropriate candidate. Certainly my sister and brother-in-law do more than their share towards the Christmas celebration without having to head off into the wilds like that. So I basically settled into permanent duty awhile back.

The rest of the discussion would go like this:

Can't he take trains and/or buses to cut down the burden on Mudcat?
Why yes. Yes, I suppose he could.

Does he pay for gas?
Never.

Why does a 52 year old man not have the ability to get himself around? What's up with that?
I know.

Well that was efficient.

Glad we had this talk.

Basically, like me, he is an addict/alcoholic - but just never gets it together. He never stops jumping from job to job and dingy apartment to dingy apartment. Always broke. He doesn't take care of himself and has terrible teeth. He smokes and shakes.

He is a great guy. Gentle, smart guy.

But just one of those humans.
