qualifying is to determine the starting grid positions for the race

3 sessions by time, Q1, Q2, Q3

first session only the top 17 make it to the next one

second session only the top 10 make it to the next one

sucky cars use them to test the car in a real setting, the good ones save the best for the last 2 minutes changing tires right before

that's pretty much it

Just in case: Lewis Hamilton has a 5 place grid penalty for a change of gearbox for those who might've been debating betting on him for pole position.
