even though contract renegotiation is prohibited by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

He is scheduled to make $526,217 in the upcoming season.

Personally I do not find it unreasonable. Players are always asking to have their contracts reduced after sub-par seasons - so why shouldn't it work both ways, right?

Right.

Does seem unfair that he's going to be grossly underpaid vs. the other star rookie QBs. RG3 and Luck got massive signing bonuses. Wilson's stuck making mid-6-figures 'til the end of 2014.

Poor guy.

Is the signing bonus tied to the draft order?

I guess that'd be fair.

I think so. I know when you are drafted in the 3rd round like RW there is a cap on how much you can make per year.

I wonder how much Brady made as a 6th round pick in his early years. He could be the lowest paid QB in history that won his first Superbowl.

That's well and good except for the fact that the vast majority of NFL contracts aren't guaranteed. Players can be cut and the team doesn't have to pay them anymore. Also, considering the short expectancy of an NFL career, even one year of being grossly underpaid can mean a great deal to a player's future financial stability. Most of those guys aren't becoming brain surgeons after their careers are over.

And his wife is scary looking.

Blame the Ryan Leafs of the world. That's why rookies are limited to what they can earn based on draft pick order.

You can maybe blam leaf for the vastly lower bonuses given to top picks in the new deal, but it's still exponentially more than 3rd round picks make. Luck/RGIII were set for life before playing a game. ( well unless they are as dumb as Jmonkey/Leaf ). But, 3rd round picks get about the same as before, not much.

Yes pretty much.

Exactly, this isn't like the NBA were all the contracts are guaranteed and you only have to play well once every five years to get a huge deal. Wilson's proven he's a very good NFL QB and would like to be paid as one.

If they start negotiating current contracts based on performance of previous year then the owners would want to get money back if the opposite happens and the player under-performs. Like they can ask Matt Flynn to give them back the millions he made this year because he didn't play. Then Matt Flynn can sue Pete Carroll because he didn't give him the opportunity to play. Then Pete Carroll can sue the GM who made the trade. It will be a never ending cycle of lawsuits.

Yes! A never ending cycle of lawsuits! That's my dream for the future of professional sport.

Super deluxe.

This isn't new. If you under perform in the NFL you get cut.
