No shortage of material for a thread with that title but the one I am really noticing these days:

I keep hearing the media analysts say that Andy Murray will have trouble in the Wimbledon final because of pressure to win at home.

Okay. If there is one thing I know about sports - one thing that is not just a matter of opinion or judgement - one thing supported by overwhelming statistics going back a hundred years and more - it is that home field/court/ice/pool/range/pitch/whatever is an ADVANTAGE. Why I keep hearing this theory suddenly that Murray and this specific situation are the reverse, I don't know - except that sports talking-heads are stupid and just need any kind of shit to say.

If Andy Murray has trouble in the final it will be because Federer is a better player and the home crowd, while helpful, was not enough to overcome it.

Anyhoo - AIR BET ON MURRAY!

:megaman:

murray is a headcase and, at times, the laziest player ive ever seen at that level... normally, i would agree with you, muddy...but the crowd loves federer too and murray ALWAYS lets the pressure to win at Wimbledon get to him...

plus, i have a few HUGH Fed to win futures worth 5500ish (that i dont plan on hedging out much more than what they cost me)... i have to root for Murray to go full blown basket case tomorrow...

If he was winning all the majors except Wimbledon that might make some sense but it just looks to me like plugging in explanations to fit the conclusion you/they want to reach.

I believe in numbers. Home court is an advantage. Would the line be different if this match was in Switzerland? Yes, definitely, and there is a reason for that.

But if we just talked about the simple truth there is not much to say. Psychological factors can't be disproved so let's all be mindreaders. Maybe Murray is also freaked out by crepes, koalas and Kim Kardashian and that explains his failure at the other majors.

Why not?

More likely, it's his talent level.

there is no doubt that he isnt as good as fed/nads/djok ... i guess the "big four" sounds better than the "big three" :dunno: ... and i agree, there is a reason why he is always a dog to the other 3 ... but there will be a million things running through his mind tomorrow and only 1 thing fed will be thinking about...winning:goodforyou:

As much as I respect your psychic connection to the athlete - I would think Murray will be in the same psychological position as any guy/team playing a big game at home. He will have pressure/desire/support/etc.

The numbers show definitively that it is an advantage. I don't necessarily even understand why but somehow, home field is an advantage.

You can make the argument that Team A expects to win and Team B wants to win. Naturally Team A wants to win as well but perhaps takes things a little for granted and in doing so makes more mistakes or under-values the effort put forth by Team B and Team B wins.

I would say Team B "wanted" it more.

When you just go through the motions and lose you obviously didn't want it badly enough to perform at your pique and the other team does or even performs at an even higher level then how could you not agree that one team wanted it more?

To answer your question Mudcat Murray is Scottish and is not playing home. Scottish usually get slaughtered in London and we expect this trend to continue tomorrow.

meh, he is the British #1 and has lived in London for a while...they consider him the hometown kid...but it doesnt matter...in tennis, the surface dictates more than where the event is being held...advantage Federer on grass

Another one that makes me crazy is when two talking heads are chatting about golf and one asks the other for a prediction for an upcoming tourney. So the guy gives him one, picks a player. And then the first guy proceeds to analyze why the chosen golfer is unlikely to win.

Like, dude. The guy just made a prediction of one guy against the entire field. Of course it is more likely to be wrong than right. But he took a shot like you asked him to so shut up.

Okay this is lame-ass without actually naming the offending media wanker but anyway I remember it as something I kept hearing in the lead-up to the US Open and it was multiple guys and I don't remember who specifically so this time I will just do a generic shout out.
