This weekend I saw The Life of Emile Zola, which was a Best Picture Oscar winner from mid-30's. It was very good for a movie of that era. While I have doubts about its historical accuracy, it was very engaging and I give it a 7/10.

Speaking of movies of that era (more or less), I saw Gaslight recently. It is a good demonstration of several reasons why I can't engage with many old movies. It's full of unnatural and manipulative plot devices. Ingrid Bergman (who won Best Actress for this) was laugh-out-loud hammy in many scenes. But because it is an interesting concept - and some of it is well executed - and I am feeling generous, I give it a 5.

Man, I can't even stand to watch stuff from the early 60's and older... but I could see myself sitting through that Zola biopic on a Sunday afternoon.

ANyone watch both Girl With The Dragon Tattoo movies? I'm kind of intrigued to see the American one even though the original didn't wow me.

I used to think like this but now I love the fast talky B&W movies on TCM.

Just finished watching Snowtown. T'was much better than I anticipated. Great suspense/psycho thriller. Fantastic acting by the two leads. Nice visual treatment and boatloads of interesting shots throughout the movie. Highly recommended.

8.3 Matty Rains.
